Legislation

A newly qualified driver in Nijmegen wants to tow a 1,400 kg trailer with his car. Together, car and trailer have a permitted maximum mass of 3,900 kg. Which licence does he need at a minimum?

A BE licence, because above a 3,500 kg combination code 96 is not enough
B licence with code 96, because the combination stays under 4,250 kg
A plain B licence, because the trailer itself is not overloaded

Explanation

False — you only look at the trailer. If the trailer is heavier than 750 kg, the whole combination counts: with a plain B licence it may be at most 3,500 kg; up to 4,250 kg you need code 96. (Reglement rijbewijzen art. 5, 15, 21 | VekaBest p.21-22 (Hoofdstuk 2 §2.1))
