Emission class on the registration or in the RDW register

A vehicle's emission class (Euro standard) is stated on the registration document and in the RDW vehicle register. That class decides whether you may enter a low-emission zone; the year of manufacture alone is not decisive.

How the exam asks it

About Environmental zone versus zero-emission zone: who may enter?: which statement is WRONG?

  1. Regulation verified 2026-07-10 - a hybrid commercial vehicle running on fossil fuel does not get automatic access; it follows the emission-class transition rules (Euro 5 until 1-1-2027, Euro 6 until 1-1-2028; new vans emission-free from 1-1-2025).
  2. These are two separate rules with a different target group: environmental zone affects private cars, commercial vehicles, trucks and buses (diesel); zero-emission zone affects only vans and trucks (commercial).
  3. Regulation (verified 2026-07-10) - the zero-emission zone applies to vans and trucks (commercial transport), NOT to private cars.
  4. An environmental zone is only for diesel trucks; ordinary private cars may always enter.
Show the answer

Correct answer: An environmental zone is only for diesel trucks; ordinary private cars may always enter.

The environmental zone is a banned area for private cars, commercial vehicles, trucks OR buses with a diesel engine. A diesel private car is therefore included

Why learners get this wrong: A hybrid van running on fossil fuel may always enter a zero-emission zone, because it is partly electric.

  3. A zero-emission zone also bars ordinary petrol or diesel private cars, just like an environmental zone.

Correct answer: A zero-emission zone also bars ordinary petrol or diesel private cars, just like an environmental zone.

Regulation (verified 2026-07-10) - the zero-emission zone applies to vans and trucks (commercial transport), NOT to private cars. A private car, even a hybrid, falls outside this rule

At a zero-emission-zone sign in the centre of Rotterdam you are driving your own hybrid private car, partly on petrol. What applies?

  1. You may not enter — only fully electric or hydrogen may pass
  2. You may enter — the zero-emission zone does not apply to private cars
Show the answer

Correct answer: You may enter — the zero-emission zone does not apply to private cars

The zero-emission zone targets vans and trucks; private cars, including hybrids, fall outside that rule (Book p.202 + regulation).

Why learners get this wrong: A zero-emission zone also bars ordinary petrol or diesel private cars, just like an environmental zone.
