How the exam asks it

With a caravan you drive outside the built-up area on an ordinary provincial road in Twente (no expressway, no motorway). What is your maximum speed?

  1. 80 km/h — outside the built-up area on an ordinary road
  2. 90 km/h — outside the built-up area you may do 90 with a trailer
  3. 100 km/h — traffic goes faster outside the built-up area
Show the answer

Correct answer: 80 km/h — outside the built-up area on an ordinary road

Why learners get this wrong: Outside the built-up area you may drive 90 km/h everywhere with a trailer.

On the A16 near Zwijndrecht traffic is jammed solid across three lanes; there is no hard shoulder. Behind you an ambulance approaches with flashing lights and siren. What do you do?

  1. You move over where you can, so that the ambulance can get through
  2. You switch to the lane that is still moving a bit faster
  3. You wait until the rows form the fixed left/right formation
Show the answer

Correct answer: You move over where you can, so that the ambulance can get through

False — you look for a faster lane. In a jam you do not change lanes, even if another lane seems faster; without a hard shoulder you clear space for the emergency service

Why learners get this wrong: In a traffic jam you may change lanes if another lane is clearly moving faster.

With your off-road vehicle and your BE licence you tow a horse trailer with a permitted maximum mass of exactly 3,500 kg along the A28 towards Drachten. No other signs apply. What is your maximum speed there?

  1. 90 km/h, because the trailer is not heavier than 3,500 kg
  2. 80 km/h, because from 3,500 kg the 90 no longer applies
  3. 100 km/h, because that is the maximum with a trailer on the motorway
Show the answer

Correct answer: 90 km/h, because the trailer is not heavier than 3,500 kg

False — you place the limit wrongly. The 90 km/h on expressways and motorways applies when the trailer's permitted maximum mass is not more than 3,500 kg; exactly 3,500 kg still qualifies. Only above that does it stay 80

Why learners get this wrong: With a trailer of exactly 3,500 kg you may no longer do 90 on the motorway, only 80 km/h.
