A1 – The maximum speed equals the value shown on the sign

Series: A -- Speed

Legal meaning

Maximum speed.

Source: RVV 1990 annex 1 · checked 2026-10-23

Shape and colour

Round white sign with a red rim and a black number: the maximum speed in km/h for every driver on this stretch.

Where the sign stands

On the right at the start of the stretch; repeated after every junction while the limit continues, otherwise the general limit of the road type applies again.

What the exam asks about this sign

The exam nearly always asks how far the limit reaches: to the next junction, to another A-sign or to the end of the built-up area. The trap is a lower general limit that overrides the sign, for example 30 in a zone or 100 on an expressway with a higher number on an old sign. Never drive faster than the sign and never faster than the road type allows.

Trap

Treating A3 like a fixed limit, same as A1.

A1 is a fixed maximum speed; A3 is electronic and its value can change.

  3. Sign A3, matrix sign — mandatory to obey
Show the answer

Correct answer: Sign A4, advisory speed — you may ignore it without a fine
