A2 – End of the previously indicated maximum speed

Series: A -- Speed

Legal meaning

End of maximum speed.

Source: RVV 1990 annex 1 · checked 2026-10-23

Shape and colour

Round grey sign with a crossed-out number: end of the A1 maximum speed; from here the limit of the road type applies.

Where the sign stands

On the right where the lower limit ends, often at the end of roadworks or a village centre; it need not be repeated.

What the exam asks about this sign

The question is usually: which speed applies after this sign? Not 'unlimited' but the general limit of the road type: 50 in the built-up area, 80 outside it, 100 on an expressway, 130 (or 100 by day) on a motorway. Candidates often pick the old limit or a number that is too high; look at where you are driving, not at the crossed-out number.

Exam question on this sign

About The seven categories of traffic signs (appendix 1): which statement is WRONG?

  1. Command signs (round, blue) are a separate category from category C (round, red border).
  2. A yellow diamond-shaped sign belongs to category A (speed).
  3. B1 (priority road) has its own yellow diamond shape, not a triangle.
  4. F1 is listed literally under 'Other commands and prohibitions', not under chapter C 'Closure'.
Show the answer

Correct answer: A yellow diamond-shaped sign belongs to category A (speed).

Category A (speed) consists of round signs (A1, A2...); the yellow diamond shape is unique to category B (priority, sign B1)

Why learners get this wrong: Every round traffic sign is a prohibition sign.
