How the exam asks it

Near Gulpen a military colonne is approaching from the left. The first vehicle (blue flag) has not yet reached the junction where you want to cross. What applies?

  1. The colonne has priority regardless, no matter the ordinary rules
  2. I may not cross at all, because a colonne is approaching
  3. The ordinary priority rules of this junction determine who goes first
Show the answer

Correct answer: The ordinary priority rules of this junction determine who goes first

Why learners get this wrong: An approaching military column has priority in any case, even when its first vehicle has not yet reached the junction.

About Bridge and tunnel: side wind, the bridge light, and the tunnel emergency procedures: which statement is correct?

  1. At the bridge light you only need to stop if the red light is flashing, not if it is burning continuously (steady) red.
  2. You may only switch on your dipped headlights once you actually enter the tunnel, not earlier.
  3. Because the wind also passes underneath, a bridge's road surface cools faster and freezes earlier than ordinary roads.
  4. If your own car catches fire in a tunnel, your best option is to turn around or reverse to the nearest tunnel entrance.

About Level crossing: markers, the Saint Andrew's cross, and the red flashing light: which statement is WRONG?

  1. You must stop as soon as the crossing lights start flashing red and the alarm bells start ringing; the barriers only lower a few seconds later.
  2. Both types of level crossing have flashing lights and alarm bells; the only difference is the presence or absence of barriers.
  3. Every level-crossing marker post stands at the same distance from the crossing, regardless of how many stripes it has.
  4. One Saint Andrew's cross means one track, two crosses mean two OR MORE tracks at that same crossing — not two crossings.
Show the answer

Correct answer: Every level-crossing marker post stands at the same distance from the crossing, regardless of how many stripes it has.

Each diagonal stripe represents 80 metres: three stripes at 240 m, two stripes at 160 m, one stripe at 80 m before the crossing

Why learners get this wrong: You only need to stop for a level crossing once the barriers start to lower, not already at the red flashing light.
