Road markings as a speed indication (100-80-60)

The markings of a road outside built-up areas hint at the speed limit: a double centre line with green filling goes with 100 km/h, an ordinary centre line with 80 km/h, and edge lines only, without a centre line, with a 60 km/h road. It is a guide only: the speed or zone sign decides, and without a sign the limit outside built-up areas is 80 km/h.

How the exam asks it

About Signage: E/A/N-roads, K-signs and speed-indicating road markings: which statement is correct?

  1. If the road marking shows you are on a '100 km/h road', you may really drive 100 km/h, regardless of which sign is present.
  2. An N-road is also a kind of motorway, just like an A-road.
  3. Sign K3 is the high decision sign above the motorway; K4 points to a service area.
  4. An A-road is a Dutch motorway and is often also part of an E-road, the international European main route.
Show the answer

Correct answer: An A-road is a Dutch motorway and is often also part of an E-road, the international European main route.

An A-road is a Dutch motorway and is often also part of an E-road, the international European main route

Why learners get this wrong: If the road marking shows you are on a '100 km/h road', you may really drive 100 km/h, regardless of which sign is present.

About Signage: E/A/N-roads, K-signs and speed-indicating road markings: which statement is WRONG?

  1. K4 is the high decision sign with lane and turn-off panels; K3 is the sign to a service area with name and facility symbols.
  2. An A-road and an E-road are two separate, mutually exclusive categories; a road is either an A-road or an E-road.
  3. An N-road is a Dutch main road that is NOT a motorway.
  4. The marking IS an indication of the maximum speed, but NOT a guarantee; the real maximum speed is indicated by signs.

On a road near Simpelveld you see a broken line on the side of the carriageway, with no advisory lane, and no sign at all. Based on the marking alone: may you assume that 80 km/h is certainly allowed here?

  1. No, the marking is an indication, not a guarantee — the real speed is on a sign
  2. Yes, the '80 km/h' marking is just as binding as a sign
