Sign J3: Warning for a bend to the left

J3 – Warning for a bend to the left

Series: J -- Warning

Legal meaning

Bend to the left.

Source: RVV 1990 annex 1 · checked 2026-10-23

Shape and colour

Triangle with a red rim and a black arrow bending left: dangerous bend to the left.

Where the sign stands

On the straight approach before the bend (about 30 m, outside town ≥ 100 m per CROW), on the right; inside town usually no bend sign.

What the exam asks about this sign

The exam asks what to do at a bend to the left: take speed off before the bend and keep right, especially because in a left bend you are pushed towards the centre where oncoming traffic drives. Trap: confusing the arrow direction with J2.

Exam question on this sign

Outside the built-up area, on an 80 km/h road near Vijlen, you see a triangular sign with a red border and a black arrow bending to the right (J2). What is the correct reaction?

  1. Turn right at the next side road: the arrow indicates a mandatory direction.
  2. Reduce speed before the bend: the road curves sharply to the right and the force pushes you to the left.
  3. Expect a bend to the left: the arrow shows the oncoming driver's line.
Show the answer

Correct answer: Reduce speed before the bend: the road curves sharply to the right and the force pushes you to the left.

Why learners get this wrong: Sign J2 (triangle with a bending arrow) obliges you to turn right at the next opportunity.
