Source: RVV 1990 annex 1 · checked 2026-10-23

Blue rectangular sign with the white place name: start of built-up area.

Where the sign stands

On the boundary of the built-up area, on the right; the back of the same post carries H2 for oncoming traffic.

What the exam asks about this sign

The exam asks what applies from this sign: 50 km/h (unless a sign says otherwise), inside the built-up area you may not overtake just before a junction, you may not park along a broken yellow line, and the exit and priority rules stay the same. Trap: candidates think the limit only starts at an A1; the town sign itself is enough.

Exam question on this sign

On an 80 km/h road outside the built-up area near Apeldoorn, a temporary sign at roadworks shows 50. Because of the barriers and a bend you can only see a short way ahead. How fast do you drive?

  1. At most 50 km/h, and slower if you cannot see far ahead
  2. Simply 50 km/h: whoever keeps to the number on the sign drives correctly
  3. At most 80 km/h, because the standard for this road outranks the sign
Show the answer

Correct answer: At most 50 km/h, and slower if you cannot see far ahead

False — you think the speed rule is only a fixed number. You must also always be able to stop within the distance you can see and that is clear; with little view you therefore drive slower than the sign. (VekaBest H1 begrippenkader (wettelijke basis, RVV art. 19/63) — THIN ATOM, geen VekaBest-hoofdstuk 7-herhaling; zie h04_snelheid_afstand voor het boekmateriaal p.117-126)

Why learners get this wrong: The rule 'you must be able to stop within the distance you can see to be clear' sets a fixed maximum speed in km/h, just like the other speed rules.
