Sign L1: Clearance height of an underpass, as indicated
Legal meaning
Headroom of underpass.
Shape and colour
Blue square sign with a white number in metres between two triangles: the clearance of the underpass.
Where the sign stands
Just before the underpass, above or beside the road, often repeated on the structure itself.
What the exam asks about this sign
The exam asks what the number means: the clearance of the underpass; if your vehicle including load is higher, you cannot pass under it. It is information, not a ban; the ban is C19. Trap: candidates confuse the two signs and pick 'forbidden' where L1 only informs.
Often confused with
- Closed to vehicles higher than indicated on the sign.
C19— Round red: banned for vehicles higher than the measure. - Closed to vehicles wider than indicated on the sign.
C18— Banned for over-width vehicles. - Traffic tunnel
L13— Road tunnel: the whole tunnel, no height.
