What the exam asks about this sign
The exam asks who must merge at the end of a lane: the driver in the lane that ends, and they must let the other go first (zipping is courtesy, not a priority rule — zipping applies only where the lane ends in block markings). Trap: candidates think the ending lane may always merge.
Often confused with
- The acceleration/merge lane continues as a through lane
L403— Merge lane becomes a lane: the lane does not end at all. - Get in lane; indication of the lanes to follow
L4— Get in lane: lanes divide. - Warning that the road narrows on both sides
J17— Road narrows: a warning.
