Shape and colour

Round white sign with a red rim, a red and a black car side by side: overtaking ban for motor vehicles among themselves.

Where the sign stands

At the start of the no-overtaking stretch (about 10 m past the junction), one sign per direction; not repeated at every side road.

What the exam asks about this sign

The exam asks what you may and may not do at this sign: overtaking a motor vehicle is forbidden, overtaking a cyclist, moped rider or a stationary vehicle is allowed. The ban runs to F2 or to the next junction. Trap: candidates think the sign also forbids overtaking a tractor — a tractor is a motor vehicle, so indeed it does.

Trap

Reading F1 and F3 as the identical overtaking ban.

F1 bans overtaking for motor vehicles generally; F3 applies to trucks only.

Exam question on this sign

About Overtaking: the F1 sign and the five exceptions to left-overtaking: which statement is WRONG?

  1. The icon is unambiguously a RED border on a WHITE background, with a black car overtaking a red car.
  2. There are FIVE exceptions: right before/at roundabouts, driving to the right of a block marking, overtaking a traffic jam, a driver who has signalled left and pre-sorted left, and overtaking a tram.
  3. At the F1 sign (no overtaking) you may also not overtake an agricultural vehicle.
  4. Pressure from following traffic is not a recognised exception to the F1 sign.
Show the answer

Correct answer: At the F1 sign (no overtaking) you may also not overtake an agricultural vehicle.

F1 prohibits motor vehicles from overtaking EACH OTHER; agricultural vehicles may still be overtaken at this sign

Why learners get this wrong: The 'no overtaking' sign (F1) is a round sign with a BLUE background.
