Shape and colour

Round white sign with a red rim, a red lorry and a black car: overtaking ban for lorries.

Where the sign stands

At the start of each motorway direction, often with a time-window plate (6 - 19 h).

What the exam asks about this sign

The exam asks whether you may overtake at this sign: yes, if you drive a car; the ban covers lorries only (above 3500 kg). Trap: candidates pick 'nobody may overtake', that is F1. Also asked: what may a lorry still overtake? A cyclist or a moped rider.

Trap

Reading F1 and F3 as the identical overtaking ban.

F1 bans overtaking for motor vehicles generally; F3 applies to trucks only.

Exam question on this sign

About Direction of travel and overtaking bans: D-signs and F-signs: which statement is WRONG?

  1. The duty is following ONE OF the directions shown on the sign — both displayed arrows are equally valid, there is no primary and fallback direction.
  2. Sign D4 always means 'mandatory turn right'; the arrow shown is decoration, the code itself fixes the direction.
  3. F3 specifically bans TRUCKS from overtaking motor vehicles, not cars or other drivers.
  4. F1 bans motor vehicles from overtaking EACH OTHER; mopeds are not motor vehicles, so passing a moped rider does not fall under it.
Show the answer

Correct answer: Sign D4 always means 'mandatory turn right'; the arrow shown is decoration, the code itself fixes the direction.

The duty is the direction shown on the sign — the arrow determines the direction, not the code itself; the same code D4 can point a different way with a different arrow

Why learners get this wrong: Sign D6 (with two arrows, straight ahead and right) requires you to specifically drive straight ahead; turning right is merely a fallback option.
